The Caerwent Campaign
Plume of Quintus Corvus
Quintus Corvus wore a black horsehair plume on his helmet, when he sailed from the Continent to Britain, as an officer in the Twentieth Legion, The Valeria Victrix. It is said that his helmet was cleaved in two by an Iceni warrior during Boudicca’s rebellion, but Quintus himself remained completely unharmed.
The helmet had been mangled unrepairable, but Quintus nonetheless wished to retain some piece of his lucky headgear, which had been blessed in the Temple of Mars back in Rome. He therefore affixed the plume on his new helmet, which was eventually passed forward to his oldest son. The black horsehairs have miraculously managed to withstand the ravages of time, and have adorned several different helmets, all worn by the Patriarchs of the Corvii line.
